AFVS Alumni Gatherings: Xiaowei Wang

We are pleased to present the 2026 Art, Film, and Visual Studies (AFVS) Alumni Professional Practice Gatherings in our Level 3 contemporary art galleries. These intimate, public conversations will bring together AFVS and Harvard students to engage directly with distinguished alumni from the department.

Supported by the Provostial Grant for Critical Humanities at Harvard and the Mignone Center for Career Success, this student-focused series will center on questions of professional practice, interdisciplinary trajectories, and life after the AFVS program. The gatherings aim to foster dialogue between current students and alumni whose work is shaping their fields in diverse and innovative ways.

Xiaowei R. Wang is a writer and creative technologist, and the author of Blockchain Chicken Farm: And Other Stories of Tech in China's Countryside, winner of the 2023 National Book Foundation Science and Literature Award. Their multidisciplinary work sits at the intersection of technology, digital media, and environmental justice, taking shape through prose, sculpture, and textiles. They are currently a Mancosh Fellow at Northwestern University and a steward of Collective Action School (formerly Logic School), an organizing community for tech workers. Previously, they served as a faculty member in ELISAVA's Master in Design for Responsible AI and as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the UCLA Center on Race and Digital Justice. Recent support for their work includes an Eyebeam Democracy Machine Fellowship (2024), for their work on soft data storage and transmission through textiles, and a MacDowell Fellowship (2026).
