The Carpenter Center’s bookshop is a collaboration with Motto Books, a bookshop and distributor of books and magazines, based in Berlin. Founded by Alexis Zavialoff in 2007, Motto has run bookshops in Vilnius, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Moscow, Vancouver, Stuttgart, Athens, Seoul, Tokyo, and Paris. It currently collaborates with institutions such as WEILS in Brussels, Kunsthalle Basel, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, and Bergen Kunsthall.

At the Carpenter Center, the bookshop is one of the only places in the Boston-area that carries small press contemporary art books, magazines, and journals, with an emphasis on international publications and limited-edition projects. Located up the building’s ramp, in the Sert Gallery, the bookshop functions as multi-use social space that often integrates artworks amongst the moveable furniture. With direct access to CCVA’s lavender-planted terrace, the space also hosts many of the Center’s artist talks, book launches, and workshops. Well-stocked with art books from around the world, new books arrive frequently, and are often announced on CCVA’s Instagram account @ccva_harvard.
